Everything I learned about parenting came from the Brady Bunch!

REALLY?

I have this funny thought since we shock of all shocks do not have cable and only watch TV on what we can get out of the Library.  I could raise my children like we are living in the 70's having them watch all the shows I grew up on.  Though the question is did I really learn anything of value from the TV of the late 60's and 70's?

I have gotten Gilligan's Island and the Brady Bunch out on DVD from the Library  one day I was struck with the notion after watching a few episodes of the Brady Bunch that perhaps all my parenting skills come from the Brady Bunch then after watching Gilligan run around the island causing the Skipper to run into palm trees throwing out pun after pun, this made Tony think - maybe his sense of humor is from Gilligan's Island.

Today while watching an episodes of the Brady Bunch.  I came up with a short list of parenting lessons:

The Brady Bunch
Lessons in Parenting
It is helpful to:

1. Have a full time maid or nanny to help out making dinner, taking care of arguments and let you know when one of your sons has decided to run away because he doesn't feel appreciated.

2.  Make sure your husband is a very talented architect and that your doing volunteer work full time - since you have a maid this should be no problem!

3.  Hold family meetings often to discuss how to work together as a family.

4. Divide and conquer.

5. Girls can do anything  boys can do and don't you forget it.

6.  Always have a positive attitude!

7.  Make sure you have an incredible sense of humor so you can laugh at the toughest times.

8. Children respond well to love and lots of hugs.

9. Come up with creative ways to get your point across so that everyone ends up happy with the outcome!

10.  Last but not least - have a full team of writers to figure out the best possible solution to every problem!

Here's the story of a lovely lady
Who was bringing up three very lovely girls.
All of them had hair of gold, like their mother,
The youngest one in curls.

Here's the store, of a man named Brady,
Who was busy with three boys of his own,
They were four men, living all together,
Yet they were all alone.

Till the one day when the lady met this fellow
And they knew it was much more than a hunch,
That this group would somehow form a family.
That's the way we all became the Brady Bunch.
The Brady Bunch,

That's the way we all became the Brady Bunch.
The Brady Bunch.

Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale,
A tale of a fateful trip
That started from this tropic port
Aboard this tiny ship.

The mate was a mighty sailing man,
The skipper brave and sure.
Five passengers set sail that day
For a three hour tour, a three hour tour.

The weather started getting rough,
The tiny ship was tossed,
If not for the courage of the fearless crew
The minnow would be lost, the minnow would be lost.

The ship set ground on the shore of this uncharted desert isle
With Gilligan
The Skipper too,
The millionaire and his wife,
The movie star
The professor and Mary Ann,
Here on Gilligans Isle.

So this is the tale of the castways,
They're here for a long, long time,
They'll have to make the best of things,
It's an uphill climb.

The first mate and the Skipper too,
Will do their very best,
To make the others comfortable,
In the tropic island nest.

No phone, no lights no motor cars,
Not a single luxury,
Like Robinson Crusoe,
As primative as can be.

So join us here each week my freinds,
You're sure to get a smile,
From seven stranded castways,
Here on "Gilligan's Isle."

Disclaimer:  The titles of the theme songs above have a link to the site that has a list of the lyrics to theme songs, show tunes, soundtracks, one hit wonders etc.  Along the side there are some ads you may find offensive - just be warned.

Some other links you might find interesting or frightening at the level of some people's devotion to these past sitcoms.
